Who Do You Hate? - 2021.10
This is a video art project created to explore public engagement with political subjects and to test people’s destructive impulses. The artist made two pinãtas–a red elephant and a blue donkey–as representations of the two main political parties in the United States. These pinãtas were hung from a giant tree at the heart of CMU. Participants in the performance were instructed to strike one of the pinãtas based on their political views, with each participant given three hits. The participants ranged from children to older CMU alumni. Some people struck the pinãtas vigorously, while others were reluctant to hit them.
The piñatas were made from cardboard, red and blue paper strips, and glue. The insides were filled with fortune cookies, each containing a distinct message.
